The open plan flexible space is intended as a private Study space and guest suite, which benefits from a new roof terrace receiving the afternoon sun. The cramped roof space has also been opened up and the roof structure exposed to reveal a stunning lofty pitched space. The first and second floors include generous bedrooms, ensuite bathrooms and dressing room spaces with elegant full height storage which accentuates the Georgian proportions of the home. The curving white walls to the entry hall and stair create a soft entrance to the principal rooms. Light floods the whole space from the front and rear of the house, accentuated by the neutral material palettes of calacatta marble, white stained oak and matt white kitchen units and bespoke joinery. The ground floor has been opened up to create a flowing Reception and Kitchen /Dining space which opens onto a rear terrace overlooking the garden. The new stone walls recycle rubble from the site and imported. This curving stair acts as the pivot point at the core of the house and a visual connection between the floors of the home. An H-shaped plan provides pockets of external shelter on the very exposed site. Full width and height glazing and a lower rear section of the garden maximise light into the space and elevate it above a typical basement room.Ī sculptural and contemporary oak staircase connects all the floors, from lower ground to the top of the house and the large roof light above floods light down into the house. The lower ground floor was designed to create a private social space for the family opening onto the rear garden. The design intent was centred upon bringing light into the space, rationalising the internal floor plan and creating a stronger connection between the different floors. Jefferson again intervened, as the idea involved his tenacious plan for the White House wings, and as Latrobe put it to Gallatin, he interdicted your library upstairs.
